FINE ART

The oil painting process I employ is called “Technique Mixte”, which was developed by master painter Patrick Betaudier of Atelier Neo Medici, Monflanquin, France. The technique involves a centuries-old tradition of tempera painting that can be traced back to Flemish master Jan Van Eyke and his contemporaries, who achieved new and remarkably realistic effects using oil.

This time-intensive, laborious and skillful process involves completing a tonal pencil drawing  on the canvas, adding an earth tone tempera wash, building tones again with pigment whites and an ‘emulsion’ medium, applying a white veil, developing shadow tones with raw umber and an oil-based medium, and finally applying local color. The finished works appear fully dimensional, incredibly realistic and so vibrant in color that they appear to be lit from behind.
